Lying in State of President George H. W. Bush


The public is invited to pay their respects to President George H. W. Bush from 7:30 p.m. Monday, December 3, to 7 a.m. Wednesday, December 5. Please enter through the Capitol Visitor Center.

On Monday, December 3, Tuesday, December 4, and Wednesday, December 5, the Capitol Visitor Center will be closed for normal operations, and all Capitol tours are cancelled.

If you have a tour reservation and would like to reschedule, please visit our website at www.visitthecapitol.gov or contact the Visitor Services Office at (202)226-8000.

On Thursday, December 6, the Capitol Visitor Center will reopen for normal operations 8:30 a.m.

Student Program

Program 1 Art Appreciators: The Art and Architecture of the U.S. Capitol

Students explore the history and culture of America by examining art and architectural elements found in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, the Rotunda and National Statuary Hall. This program meets common core state standards and national standards for the visual arts.

Grades: 3 through 6
Number: 20-50 students per program
Length: 2 hours
Start Time: 9:30 a.m.

Program 2 Capitol Art: History, Culture, or Expression?

Through the arts and humanities, students study the art and architectural features of the U.S. Capitol and participate in a student-centered creative activity. This program is designed to address cross-curricular approaches to learning and meet common core state standards and national standards for the visual arts.

Grades: 7 through 12
Number: 20-50 students per program
Length: 2 hours
Start Time: 9:30 a.m.


Student Program

Program 3 Environment Matters: How Does a Bill Become Law?

To understand the complex way in which a bill becomes a law, students participate in activities that illustrate the process using the Chesapeake Bay and the Clean Water Acts of 1948 and 1972 as legislative examples. Groups receive passes to visit the Galleries of the U.S. Senate or the U.S. House of Representatives. This program meets common core state standards and national standards for civics and government.

Grades: 6 through 12
Number: 20-65 students per program
Length: 2 hours
