Internships

Washington, DC

In the Washington, DC office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters.  DC interns may be eligible to receive a small monthly stipend. The hours can be flexible to accommodate students' evening schedules but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session. Interns are expected to be in the office at least 35 hours per week.

In Washington, DC, interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

District

District interns play a critical role in helping constituents with federal issues and in helping put on town hall meetings. Interested interns may sometimes join District Office staff in representing the Congressman at events. Interns learn how to work effectively in a professional office environment in general, and a Congressional office in particular. Interns work between 10 and 20 hours per week, during office hours (8:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), as well as occasional special events. Because our constituents depend on the work of interns, commitment to serve the entire term is required.

To apply for a District Office internship, submit the form below, and arrange to have an email of reference sent to the District Director (christopher.moylan@mail.house.gov) along with your class and activity schedule. The reference should be from a former manager or coworker in a job or volunteer project, rather than a teacher from a class.
