Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs

New York City and our nation were changed forever by the September 11, 2001 attacks.  In Congress, my priority is simple: make sure that terrorists never again have the power to launch attacks on our country.  To that end, I introduced the Securing the Cities Act of 2015 as one of my first bills. This legislation makes permanent a program which provides funding to the NYPD and regional partners for radiological detection equipment and training. I’m proud to say the House of Representatives passed my bill by a 411-4 margin.

Unfortunately, the world is growing less safe, with ISIS controlling large swaths of Syria and Iraq; Iran getting closer to a nuclear weapon; and a resurgent Russia brazenly defying NATO in Eastern Europe.

To confront these challenges, we need to ensure our military remains the unquestioned power in the world.  We must support our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who put their lives on the line to defend us by giving them the very best equipment and training.  That means halting further dangerous cuts to our defense that have dramatically reduced the readiness of our forces to respond to the many complex threats that we face.

I am proud to serve on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on Homeland Security, both charged with jurisdiction over critical issues such as the Iran nuclear deal and combatting terrorist networks.
