President Trump Signs First Step Act into Law

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump has signed the First Step Act into law.

The bipartisan justice reform bill introduced by Reps. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) represents one of the most significant overhauls of the federal criminal justice system in a generation. Collins spoke with the president in the Oval Office about why this legislation is historic.

May 7, 2018: Collins introduces the First Step Act in the House.

May 22, 2018: The House passes the First Step Act by a vote of 360-59.

December 18, 2018: The Senate passes an updated First Step Act.

December 20, 2018: The House passes the updated First Step Act, sending it to the president's desk.

December 21, 2018: President Trump signs the First Step Act into law.
