Internships

Working in a Congressional office can be an exciting opportunity. Congresswoman Velázquez offers internships to eligible undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students in her Washington, DC office and her three district offices. The internships are unpaid, but can be applied toward college credit through your school. Both part-time and full-time internships are available.

Overview & Duties

Interns play an important role in keeping the offices running smoothly.  This internship offers a unique perspective on the inner workings of Congress and a Congressional Member’s Office. Duties may include assisting legislative staff members with research projects, attending legislative hearings and community meetings, drafting and editing written materials, and performing administrative tasks such as mail processing, data entry, answering telephones, and assisting staff when needed.

Because Congresswoman Velázquez is the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Small Business, interns in the Washington, DC office may also assist Committee staff with preparation for hearings and perform Committee-related research projects.

Application Process

Internships run throughout the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Applications will be accepted throughout the year. Please keep in mind, however, that summer is a popular season for internships, and space constraints limit the number of interns who may work in our offices at one time. Preference will be given to those residing in the 7th District of New York.

The suggested application deadlines are as follows:

Spring Session (January – May): December 1

Summer Session (June – August): May 1

Fall Session (September – December): August 1
