Yet again, we find the federal government in a partial shutdown due to the Democrats’ desire to put illegal immigration over the security of the American people. They are unwilling to compromise on mainstream and common sense border security measures like building the wall and ensuring our southern border is secure against threats like drug and human trafficking, illegal immigration, and a variety of other dangerous elements.

It seems there are two kinds of people who oppose ...a border wall:
1) Those who want open borders and believe people from other countries have a right to come here
2) Those who hate President Trump, and oppose whatever he supports.

Walls work. Saying they don't is akin to saying the world is flat. And when you combine them with policies that end catch & release, end sanctuary cities, criminalize visa overstays, close asylum loopholes, and require mandatory e-verify, they are extremely effective.

I made a promise to my constituents, and Congress as a whole made a promise to the American people - we have to get this done. I will keep fighting for what is right, and that is making sure we put the American people first.

UPDATE on government and border wall funding:

It looks like an agreement on government funding still hasn’t been reached between the House and the Senate. An announcement was just made from the Senate floor that there are not enough votes to pass the House’s CR which includes $5 billion for the border wall (a measure I fought for). They also announced that there wouldn’t be any further votes until an agreement was met between the White House, the Senate, and the House.

This... all means that the government will most likely go into a partial shutdown tonight at midnight since the Senate is not proceeding on the House CR at this time (things can always change). Negotiations are still ongoing, but my hope is that commonsense will prevail and we will finally be able to take our southern border crisis seriously.

Folks, border wall funding shouldn’t be a difficult vote. The American people spoke in 2016 and voted for a border wall, border security, and the protection of U.S. sovereignty. And here we are, two years later, and Congress still hasn’t delivered on these promises.

My position on illegal immigration, securing our border, building barriers and walls, mandating E-Verify, closing asylum loopholes, and ending dangerous catch and release has always been the same. The only difference is now we finally have a President who takes all these priorities seriously. I have been fighting alongside him from the beginning and will continue to fight because we are a nation of law and order, and we have a true crisis on our hands. We need a strong southern border to prevent dangerous illegal immigration, drug trafficking, human trafficking, terrorism, and other bad elements from entering our country and disappearing into the interior.

If we don’t accomplish a critical piece of the southern border crisis – building the wall – right now, then when are we going to do it? Nancy Pelosi becomes Speaker next month, and we all know she will be leading the charge for open borders.

The House reconvenes tomorrow at noon, so I will be posting updates as they come. Stay tuned.

The Senate needs to take up the House passed CR to provide our nation with the much needed border wall and border security. We must secure our homeland and protect United States sovereignty!

When is the last time (this week excluded) that you heard mention of ISIS or Al-Qaeda? I follow these things and I believe it has been six months or more since they were even a news story. Elements of each still exist, don’t get me wrong, and radical Islamic terrorism is still alive and well.

But ISIS has lost its territory. Now, this is about the Syrian Civil War where Syria, Russia, Iran and other elements are all in the same battle space. Should we be entangled in Syria’s ...civil war when ISIS (the original goal was to defeat and decimate this terrorist organization) has been destroyed?

We have been fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and now, Syria, since the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks in NYC, Pennsylvania, and Washington. For 17 and a half years, our men and women have been deployed (often many times) in harm’s way overseas. How many have died? How many have to die?

President Trump believes ISIS to be defeated and wants to avoid an escalation of tensions, should our troops meet other adversaries in Syria. He has also announced a troop drawdown in Afghanistan after years of trying to stabilize the situation there.

I believe in strong defense and have supported the funding for such, as well as Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO funding). But I am in agreement to “bring our boys home” (men and women serving overseas).
