Arizona

As a result of Saturday's tragic shooting in Arizona all votes in Washington were cancelled this week so that the House of Representatives could focus on issues related to the attack on Congresswoman Giffords, her staff and her constituents. I was shocked and horrified by this senseless act of violence. My thoughts are with my colleague, who remains hospitalized in critical condition. Doctors have reported encouraging signs, and I am hopeful that Gabby will recover quickly so she can return to the job she loves. My thoughts are also with the others who were injured as a result of this violence. I hope those who remain hospitalized can soon return to their families. And my heart breaks for those who lost their lives. I extend my deepest sympathies to their families. Please know that a nation grieves with you.

The House passed a resolution honoring the victims of Saturday's shooting and reaffirming the importance of constituent access to their elected officials. Briefings were also held on the status of security in district offices, at events in the community and at the Capitol. I expect that dialogue to continue in the weeks ahead.

Many of you reached out to our office this week, to express your shock over this horrific act and your support for the victims. I thank you for that.

Haiti

One year ago this week, a massive earthquake shattered Haiti, leaving thousands dead. Many more were wounded and faced with the destruction of their homes and places of business. One year later, there is so much still to be done to help the people of Haiti recover from this tragedy and rebuild their lives. I have seen the devastation myself and I share the impatience of many at the pace of reconstruction. A year later, we continue to mourn those who perished and the struggle to help survivors continues. I will continue to do everything I can to help Haiti recover.

What's up Next Week

The House will vote next week on whether to repeal the health care reform bill that passed last year. This vote was scheduled to be held this week, but was postponed due to the tragedy.
