World War II veteran Andrew J. Dodges reached out to Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) in late November with a Christmas wish: to receive a new set of the military service medals he earned while serving in the United States Army. Corporal Dodges’ medals, including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, were stolen from his home.
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) honored over 40 local veterans who served during the Vietnam War during a ceremony at the Veteran One-Stop Center of Western New York.
The America Vietnam War Commemoration was authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense, and launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
At the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) presented the family of Private James Peter Tymon with long-overdue recognition for his sacrifice in service to the United States during World War I.
“A century ago Private Tymon lost his life bravely defending this country,” said Congressman Higgins. “It is our honor to present his family with a lasting expression of gratitude from the nation he faithfully served.”
During a gathering of Western New York Military Order of the Purple Heart members, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) honored wounded veterans who served during the Vietnam War including a special presentation of a Bronze Star and other medals to Chapter 187 Chaplain Robert Segool.
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) was joined by New York State Assemblymember Monica Wallace, Depew Village Trustee Audrey Hamernick and local veterans, including Depew American Legion Post 1528 and Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 187, to present the family of Private Walter Rydzewski with the Purple Heart and other medals earned 100 years ago, during World War I.
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced legislation approved by the House of Representatives includes language that extends the Kids Korner childcare program at the Buffalo VA Medical Center through 2019.
“Buffalo has been an example for the country, demonstrating when you offer in-house child care for veterans, it removes an obstacle for treatment,” said Congressman Higgins.

Buffalo, NY —VA Western New York Healthcare System is celebrating the renovation of inpatient unit 9D on Wednesday, August 1 at 10am at 3495 Bailey Avenue in Buffalo with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The renovation project completely updated 10,932 square feet for inpatient care totaling $3.9 million. The twenty bed unit features sixteen private rooms and two double rooms. Included in the project is the updating of all utility systems to support state of the art health care, increased patient comfort and energy efficiency.
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced the House of Representatives has approved a pair of bills aimed at providing additional support to women veterans and veterans engaged in the veteran treatment court program.
“Both of these bills provide additional people to serve the needs of our veterans,” said Congressman Higgins. “Through this human interaction, with outreach specialists and peer counselors, veterans are better supported and positioned to overcome challenges.”
