Congressman Tom MacArthur is calling for the director of FEMA to resign. The congressman believes that if the director isn’t holding anyone accountable, then someone needs to hold him accountable for not taking care of this.
“By shining a bright light on it, I hope to do two things: One, get a fairer deal for the people that have been taken advantage of. And two, I want hearings. I want to know who directed this because there has to be some accountability.”
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (WABC) -- This family has a familiar story. Flooded out by Sandy, only got $14,000 from FEMA, even though it will cost nearly a hundred grand more to fix their house. Now they say they were victims of fraud in the review process.
Darrell Wade is dumb-founded. His cancer stricken mom's Atlantic City house was underwater during Sandy. He says a FEMA adjuster documented all the damage from the floors to the furnace, yet they only got a fraction of their claim.
Earlier this month the Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General released a report entitled, “FEMA Does Not Provide Adequate Oversight of Its National Flood Insurance Write Your Own Program.” This report summarized a yearlong investigation, prompted by a “60 Minutes” interview in March of 2015, which revealed that thousands of superstorm Sandy victims had been wrongfully denied insurance claims due to corrupt and fraudulent practices.

Washington, DC – Congressman Tom MacArthur today responded to FEMA extending the deadline for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders to request a review of their claims filed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
Following pressure from Congressman MacArthur and 106 local Ocean County elected officials, the extension was announced hours before the deadline with many residents in the Third Congressional District still attempting to file claims reviews.
Washington, DC - Congressman Tom MacArthur was today joined by 106 local Ocean County elected officials in a letter to Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator (FEMA) Craig Fugate, calling on him to extend the deadline for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders to request a review of their claims filed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. As Congressman MacArthur traveled throughout Ocean County during the August work period, he encountered many residents expressing concerns with the September 15 deadline to enter the review process.
