Statement on President Trump's Intent to Withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement

According to news reports this afternoon, President Trump is likely to announce this week his intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris accord on climate.
 
The U.S. is the second largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.  If we should fail to meet our obligations under the treaty, either by continuing on our present course of polluting the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, or by failing to provide leadership for other nations to control their CO2 emissions, our earth will be headed toward an irreversible climate catastrophe of temperature extremes, damaging storms, coastal flooding, drought, permanent damage to ecosystems and species populations, risks to food security, and social unrest in some cases leading to military conflict.  
 
The science is clear and definitive. Ignoring or defying the science is a crime on the scale of starting a nuclear war.  195 nations came together after more that ten years of negotiations to change course and avoid a human made global disaster.  Only Syria and Nicaragua are not part of the agreement and Nicaragua refused to sign because the agreement did not have sufficient enforcement protocols.
 
The overwhelming majority of the American people are calling on the President to abandon his threats to leave the treaty.  Corporate America is calling on the President to abandon his threats to leave the treaty.  A 2015 Pentagon report sets out the clear national and global security consequences of failing to halt global climate change.  194 other nations are calling on the President to abandon his threats to leave the treaty.  And to our great shame as a nation and betrayal of our people, our withdrawal from the treaty will do nothing to bring back jobs in the coal industry or other CO2 emitting industries which are vanishing in any case because of the growing economic efficiencies of solar, wind and other sustainable energy sources.  
 
Our exit from the Paris agreement will announce to the world that our word, our international commitments cannot be trusted.  Our exit from the Paris agreement will announce to the world that we have relinquished our responsibilities as a partner for peace and economic security.  Our exit from the Paris agreement will announce to the world that unprincipled short term American political manipulations and machinations outweigh our sense of humanity, social and economic justice.
