Davis Statement on the Expiration of Educational Excellence Commissions

Congressman Danny K. Davis today expressed his disappointment as it became clear, as reported on Politico today, that President Trump apparently will allow the three presidential advisory commissions focused on educational excellence for Hispanic, African American and Asian American and Pacific Islanders to expire without any discussions with the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus or the Congressional Asian American/Pacific Islander Caucus to expire:

WHITE HOUSE EDUCATION ADVISORY PANELS SET TO EXPIRE: Three presidential advisory commissions focused on educational excellence for Hispanic, African American, and Asian American and Pacific Islander students will expire Saturday without action from President Donald Trump. Members of the White House Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics said earlier this month that the Trump administration has had little to no contact with them all year. When asked if the president will extend the life of the advisory panels, a White House spokesman told Morning Education, "We don't have any announcements to make at this time." The advisory panel on educational excellence for Hispanic students was created in 1990 through an executive order signed by former President George H.W. Bush. In September 2015, the Obama administration renewed the advisory committee for another two years. All the current members were appointed by former President Barack Obama.

Davis stated, "This is an ask that I sent to President Obama.  It offered an opportunity to ensure that community voices on education would be heard at the highest levels of government.  The Advisory Commission for African Americans was tasked with: "work[ing] with individuals and organizations throughout the country to highlight and share effective national and local programs, policies, and practices that support the development and success of African American students."  I am disappointed that this administration has shown little or no interest in such discussions and has pressed on with an agenda formulated without any such input.  Closing this communication channel and ignoring the evidence based recomendations which flowed from the commissions marks a huge setback for our children and raises serious questions about the commitment of the Trump administration to educational excellence and equity."
