Davis Statement on Sessions Meeting with Russian Ambassador

We now know that during his confirmation hearings before his colleagues in the Senate Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath to very specific questions about his communications with Russian officials and that he had, not one but at least two, private meetings with the Russian Ambassador to the United States, Sergey I. Kislyak.  AG Sessions, who has demanded the highest standards from previous Attorneys General should recognize the seriousness of his situation and resign before entangling the Department of Justice further.  Should he refuse to resign, President Trump must fire him immediately.  New information continues to emerge demonstrating the urgent need for an independent investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 elections and President Trump’s campaign and personal ties, financial or political, to Russia and Russian officials. The American people are demanding, and they deserve, answers not denials.

The “Russian Connection” is of deep concern and a bi-partisan, independent investigation must go forward, but it should not let us become distracted from President Trump’s assault on our democracy, on his reckless expansion of military spending, on the rights of the undocumented, on the rights of women, on the LBGTQ community, on voting rights, on the rights of workers, on the environment, on public education, and on health care, especially on Medicaid, and on Social Security.  As resistence to President Trump’s agenda continues to build it is important to stay focused and energized on the central issues of the day.
