Washington, D.C.
In my Washington, D.C. office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students. Although all internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In Washington, interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.
Illinois
Congressman Bobby L. Rush, U.S. Representative for the First Congressional District of Illinois, is seeking an intern for his Chicago office. Interns will gain practical experience and working knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a fast-paced Congressional District Office.
The intern’s primary responsibilities include conducting research in support of Congressman Rush’s initiatives; assisting staff with projects and administrative tasks; managing the upkeep of the constituent database and handling constituent phone calls. Interns will also attend government and community meetings with staff; and participate in staff planning meetings.
Internships are open to all majors and designed for undergraduate students with an interest in public service and/or government. Starting and ending dates are flexible, depending on the academic calendar, although prospective interns should be able to commit at least 15 hours per week over three weekdays. A personal interview is required for consideration.
Qualifications: Strong academic background and interest in pursuing a career in public service or government. Successful interns will be hardworking and self-motivated, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and strong attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
