Hunting, Fishing & the Outdoors

I grew up in Brainerd, Minnesota, in the heart of Minnesota's lake country. Along with my brother, Jim, and sister, Mary Pat, I began my lifelong enjoyment of hunting, fishing and the outdoors at an early age. The Nolan homestead in rural Crosby is now a regular gathering place for 5 generations of Nolans who together tap maple syrup in spring, harvest wild rice in the fall, and never miss a hunting or fishing opener.

As a gun owner and hunter, and a member of the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, I work to pass legislation in the House of Representatives that protects the rights of responsible gun owners, preserves wildlife habitat for recreation, and supports hunting and fishing on federal lands.

BREEZY POINT—"I'm not a deer hunter, but after this, I could be," commented Tim Terrill of Breezy Point.

He was one of about 500 browsing the offerings of the 14th annual Minnesota Governor's Deer Opener in Breezy Point Thursday night. It was hard not to feel like part of the hunting party among all the orange and storytelling floating around the room.

ORR — What started a year and a half ago as an idea to better connect the many miles of ATV trails in and around the Orr and Crane Lake areas has turned into one of the fastest growing clubs in northern Minnesota.

And the 18-month effort has lead to an expanded trail system for riders across the area.

The group, known as the Voyageur Country ATV Club, celebrated the expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony last week at Melgeorge’s Elephant Lake Lodge. Around 200 people showed up to mark the occasion including several elected officials.
