The new Farm Bill, which the House is expected to take up later this week, is the strong, bipartisan product of an urban-rural coalition determined to preserve and provide certainty to the tens of thousands of small and medium-sized family farms at risk during these uncertain economic times in rural America.
The new Dairy Margin Coverage program offers that certainty through more flexible coverage at a lower cost on the first 5 million pounds of milk produced - about 240 ca...ttle - providing dairy producers and their families with a much needed safety net.
It’s also important to note that this measure protects the SNAP nutrition program from changes that would have left tens of thousands of low-income Americans - including elderly or disabled individuals, veterans, and families - to go hungry.
The final deal preserves important benefits, all the while producing $1 billion in savings through administrative adjustments.
As a fellow Minnesotan and member of the House Agriculture Committee, let me say that Minnesotans can be particularly proud of Ranking Member Collin Peterson's leadership in moving this measure through a great many barriers and difficulties.
Last week, I was pleased to announce - with Senator Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Senator Tina Smith - a $20 million U.S. Department of Transportation Grant to reconstruct the dreaded "can of worms" interchange in Duluth.
This federal grant is a monumental win for the city and our entire region. The funding will improve safety and freight movement along the corridor - driving business, commerce, and tourism and helping create and support hundreds of good paying jobs.
