Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Jim Himes (CT-04) issued the following statement on the 301-121 defeat of the Republicans’ latest immigration proposal in the House of Representatives:
“Another day, another failed effort by House Leadership to jam through harmful immigration legislation. Today’s bill was sold as a compromise to the press and the American people, but involved no Democratic input and tried to enshrine into law discriminatory and unjust practices that run counter to the spirit of our nation.
Today marks the sixth anniversary of the announcement of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program by President Obama. The DACA program has allowed nearly 800,000 immigrants who arrived in the United States as young children to live openly and contribute to their communities and the economy without fear of deportation. DREAMers contribute to our communities and boost our economy, create jobs, and raise wages for U.S. citizens.
Washington, DC – Today, New Democrat Coalition Rep. Pete Aguilar (CA-31) joined Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM), and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient Leticia Herrera to discuss the bipartisan “queen-of-the-hill” rule, which would force debate and a vote in the House on four measures to provide solutions for DACA recipients.

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Jim Himes (CT-04) condemned the Trump administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
While Congress works to pass a Fiscal Year 2017 appropriations bill this week, Members of the New Democrat Coalition sent a letter to Speaker Ryan and Budget Committee Chair Diane Black outlining priorities for the Fiscal Year 2018 budget resolution.
Specifically, New Dems implore that the following key policy areas are addresses in the budget:
Washington, DC – Today the Supreme Court issued a 4-4 ruling in United States v. Texas, the case concerning the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. The decision is a harsh reminder and call of action that Republicans and Democrats need to come together to pass comprehensive immigration reform to fix our broken immigration system.
New Dem Rep. Mike Quigley (IL-05) authored an op-ed discussing the importance of America being a top tourist destination. Travel is America’s largest service export and one of the top job generating industries. Rep. Quigley calls for Congress to look for ways to support the industry and increase international tourism.
