Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Speaker Ryan’s anti-family bill failed on the Floor, 121-301:

“Last week, so-called moderate Republicans folded and destroyed the best chance Congress had to provide a bipartisan, permanent legislative fix – and all they have to show for it is a failed bill of staggering cruelty that would have sold out Dreamers, families, asylum seekers and children at the border.

“The Ryan bill was the President’s outrageous, offensive mass deportation agenda made law.  Sadly, House Republicans continue to threaten the health and safety of children at the border with a new bill that is purpose-built to carry out the President’s barbaric indefinite family detention Executive Order.  Their latest monstrosity would make it legal to lock up children and families in cages in unlicensed jails indefinitely, and would rip away court-ordered protections for children’s health and safety.

“President Trump and Congressional Republicans are perpetrating child abuse with their outrageous policies.  Congress should be protecting traumatized children, not paving the way for their indefinite incarceration and the destruction of their human rights.  Democrats will continue to fight to protect Dreamers and families, and to secure our borders – just not in a way that puts children in cages.”
