PRESS RELEASE

Congressman Capuano Lauds FAA Final Rule on Passenger Protections as Positive First Step

April 20, 2011

Today Congressman Mike Capuano, sponsor of the Baggage Fairness Act, recognized the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) for issuing the final rule on air passenger protection.

"While I believe passengers deserve even more, I do applaud the FAA and USDOT for taking this important first step," stated Congressman Capuano, a member of the House Transportation Committee. "I will continue to watch this issue closely and push for greater passenger protections."

The Baggage Fairness Act, introduced by Congressman Capuano earlier this year, requires air carriers refund baggage check fees within 30 days if a passenger's baggage is lost, damaged, or delayed in reaching its destination. Additionally, this legislation requires a more prominent disclosure of baggage fees when consumers are obtaining ticket pricing information on the internet or over the phone.

The USDOT rule, released this morning, requires airlines refund baggage fees in the event a passenger's baggage is lost. It also requires air carriers and ticket agents to disclose baggage fees during the ticketing process.
