Maryland's 8th District

About Maryland's 8th District

The 8th District of Maryland encompasses parts of Carroll, Frederick, and Montgomery County. See below for more information about each County.

Carroll County

Named for Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, this beautiful County is located in central Maryland. Its rich farmlands have made it a center of productive agriculture for over two hundred years, and many descendants of the County’s early farming families still live here, such as the Shrivers (including Sargent Shriver, husband of Eunice Kennedy and the first director of the Peace Corps). The expansion of the railroad in the 19th century diversified the County’s economy, with quarries, tanneries, paper mills and factories attracting development. Carroll County’s largest employers now include the public school system, McDaniel College, Carroll Hospital Center, Penguin Random House, and various retail stores.

Frederick County

Frederick County, in northwestern Maryland, is endlessly charming and beguiling, and it offers a range of compelling natural and historical attractions. The beautiful Catoctin Mountain National Park is a hub for swimmers, boaters, campers, cyclists, equestrians and nature-lovers, and also encompasses the rustic and charming Camp David, where for seventy years U.S. presidents have retreated from Washington’s political and natural heat. Civil War buffs love to visit the County’s numerous battlefields, as well as the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in downtown Frederick. Notable figures from the County’s history include Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star-Spangled Banner, and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint. Current residents of the County include federal employees at Fort Detrick, nurses and doctors, researchers, educators at Mount St. Mary’s University and the excellent public school system, retail workers, and dairy farmers whose herds amount to one-third of the state’s total.

Montgomery County

As a next-door neighbor of the District of Columbia, Montgomery County is home to many federal employees working at government agencies in Maryland, such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the Food and Drug Administration, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and in Washington, D.C. Large employers also include Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen, and Marriott International. The County is a major retail and shopping hub, with major centers being Rockville, Bethesda, and Silver Spring, and home to a large and thriving small business community. With NIH and FDA located here, Montgomery County is home to an important bio-medical research community and every manner of scientific laboratory and research facility. Montgomery College and Washington Adventist University are located here, and the County has the country’s second highest percentage of adults with graduate degrees. It is known for its well-educated population.
