Military Academy Nominations

Instructions

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. For more information, please review the page of Frequently Asked Questions for those seeking a Military Academy Nomination.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Eligibility:

Your first step is to contact the academies to which you wish to apply. Admission officials there will establish a candidate file which helps you track your application materials. Please keep in mind a nomination is only one part of the admissions process; you must have an open candidate file with at least one service academy prior to a scheduled interview with my academy board in November. Please submit your application materials directly to the academies and schedule a physical evaluation. Click on the links below for more information about the academy of your choice.

Military Academy, West Point, VA  (www.usma.edu)
Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD  (www.usna.edu)
Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO  (www.usafa.edu)
Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY  (www.usmma.edu)
U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT  * (www.cga.edu)
* A congressional nomination is not needed for admittance to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Apply directly with USCGA.

Eligible applicants must be:
  • unmarried citizens of the United States with no dependents.
  • at least 17 years old but not past their 23rd birthday on the first of July of the year they wish to be admitted.
  • a resident of Montana. You, or your parents, must claim Montana as your primary state of residence.

Please note: A nomination through any authority does not guarantee acceptance into a service academy. Along with my office, it is advisable to request a nomination from both of Montana's U.S. Senators, and the Vice President of the United States. I will work with my fellow congressional members to ensure that as many young Montanans as eligible are given the opportunity to attend the service academies.

Important Dates:
May 15, 2018: Application acceptance begins.
July 2, 2018: Suggested deadline for completion of the SAT and ACT.
November 2, 2018: All application materials must be received in my Billings office.
Early December, 2018: Academy selection board convenes to conduct individual interviews and make recommendations for the entering class of 2018. All applicants receiving my nomination will be notified of a decision shortly thereafter.
