About Us
Who We Are
The Chief Administrative Office (CAO) is a non-partisan, non-legislative office that provides support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff.
What We Do
The CAO serves the House community by providing administrative, technical, and operational solutions so Members can perform their Constitutional duties.
Acquisitions Management
Acquisitions ensures the House acquires goods and services at the best possible value by working with Members, Committees, Leadership, and House Officers to assess and fulfill their requirements.
Customer Experience Center
The Customer Experience Center (CEC) provides House offices with digital media services, professional development, information services, and customer advocacy services. CEC Staffers also connect House offices with CAO technical, administrative, and operational experts.
Finance
The Office of Finance meets the accounting, payroll, and benefits services needs for House Members and staff. The Finance team produces the quarterly Statement of Disbursements, which accounts for all expenditures by House offices.
House Information Resources
House Information Resources (HIR) ensures the House community has secure access to the House network, as well as the technology, software, IT infrastructure, and support required for House offices to do their jobs. HIR also hosts websites for hundreds of Members and Committees and manages the website for the House of Representatives, House.gov.
House Recording Studio
The House Recording Studio provides a wide range of video and audio services for Members in broadcast and Web formats. The studio also provides live coverage of House floor proceedings and Committee Hearings.
Human Resources
The Office of Human Resources hires, trains, and develops the CAO workforce. Additionally, HR oversees the Office of Employee Assistance to provide the House community with confidential consultation to assist with personal, emotional, behavioral, substance abuse, and stress-related difficulties. HR also and oversees the House Wounded Warrior Fellowship Program, which provides two-year, paid fellowships for disabled veterans to work in congressional offices.
Logistics and Support
Logistics & Support staff build, refurbish, and move House furniture and equipment. The team also manages the House’s physical assets.
Media Galleries
The CAO facilitates three House media galleries for coverage of the House.
- Since 1879, the House (Daily) Press Gallery has worked to facilitate coverage of the House of Representatives by reporters working for the daily news media, including newspapers (foreign and domestic), wire services and online news publications.
- The Radio-Television Correspondents Gallery services broadcasters who cover the House of Representatives. The gallery serves as a liaison between Congressional offices and the electronic media.
- The Periodical Press Gallery assists correspondents working for a magazine, newsletter, non-daily newspaper, or on-line publication.
All of the galleries provide journalists with work space, credentials, and access to House Members and proceedings.
