STATEMENTSudan and South Sudan Caucus Statement on Escalating ViolenceDecember 19, 2013 WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representatives Michael McCaul (R-TX), Frank Wolf (R-VA), Michael Capuano (D-MA) and Barbara Lee (D-CA), Co-Chairs of the House Sudan and South Sudan Caucus, released the following statement about the recent violence in South Sudan: Caucus Co-Chairs: “As the co-chairs of the Sudan and South Sudan Caucus, we urge all leaders in South Sudan to show restraint and put an immediate end to the tragic violence in Juba and elsewhere in the country. We are deeply concerned about the violence and killings that have spread across Juba over the past few days, as well as the internal displacement caused by the unrest. We call upon President Kiir and his government to allow unfettered distribution of vital humanitarian assistance. We urge all who have resorted to force to rededicate themselves to the democratic ideals which South Sudan has long strived toward, including the freedoms of assembly and association, as well as respect for other basic human rights.”
