In today’s knowledge-based economy, it is more important than ever to ensure our education system aligns with the demands of the 21st century workforce. I will work to create an educational system that emphasizes high standards, accountability for results, local control, transparency and parental choice. In addition, I am a founding member and co-chair of the School Safety Caucus, focused on ensuring the safety of our kids while they are at school.
In Congress, I have also been a strong advocate for computer science and STEM education to begin earlier in our nation’s classrooms. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act Reauthorization, S. 1177, the Every Student Succeeds Act, signed into law in 2015 with my support, included provisions for which I advocated to support and enhance computer science education in our nation’s schools.
It is critical that our educational system also provide training and education for displaced workers and others seeking to enter or re-enter the workforce. A trained workforce with skills to match the needs of business means higher employment and a stronger economy. This is why I’m proud to have worked to pass the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act. The SKILLS Act reduces wasteful bureaucracy and empowers individuals by streamlining government services to ensure more dollars are actually spent on workforce training.
I will continue to work to improve the job-training programs in place and make sure federal funds are spent truly training Hoosiers for the jobs that exist.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Children across Indiana are back in school, and security is top of mind.
U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks, R-Ind., had a school safety roundtable Friday with leaders in Noblesville.
Brooks said, "We must make school safety a top priority in our communities."
She said the listening session with school and community leaders allowed her to hear some concerns about school security. She said the session also was designed to be an honest conversation with leaders about what they want from federal, state and local officials.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - On Friday, a group of school superintendents and their safety officers met with an Indiana Congresswoman who is focused on school safety.
The group met in April before a student brought a gun to school and shot a student and teacher at Noblesville West Middle School.
It's part of Congresswoman Susan Brooks' focus on school safety.
She started a school safety caucus to come up with ways to protect students saying that should be their number one priority.
