Congressman Capuano Praises FAA Announcement on Runway 14/32

January 21, 2000 -- Today, 8th District Representative Mike Capuano praised the Federal Aviation Administration for ruling that Massport's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on Runway 14/32 at Logan International Airport needs further study.

Congressman Capuano said:"This is a great day for the people of the 8th District, many of whom stand to be negatively impacted by this runway. I commend the FAA for recognizing that Massport's Draft EIS is not adequate. It does not do nearly enough to address environmental issues and it does not fully consider a regional approach to transportation."

Congressman Joe Moakley, Congressman Ed Markey and Boston Mayor Tom Menino joined Congressman Capuano in applauding the FAA's decision.

Congressman Capuano continued: "By Massport's own admission, delays will return to existing levels within five years of building this runway. What will we do then? Airport expansion, without a thorough understanding of the environmental impact and without a comprehensive regional transportation plan, is an insufficient response to demand. Everyone, including Massport, knows that this runway won't fix Logan Airport's problems. Unfortunately, Massport does not seem to be interested in working with the neighbors on this proposed expansion. I urge Massport and Governor Cellucci to go back to the drawing board and honestly pursue a regional approach to transportation," stated Rep. Capuano, who was the first elected official to publicly oppose Massport's proposal.
