RECENT VOTESCongressional override of presidential veto of H.R. 976: State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)October 18, 2007 On Thursday the House took an override vote on H.R. 976, legislation reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). As you may recall, the House and Senate passed legislation reauthorizing this program and President Bush vetoed it. This bill provides an additional $35 billion over 5 years to provide health insurance for low income children. The 6.6 million children currently receiving health insurance under SCHIP will continue to be covered and as many as 4 million additional children who are eligible but do not currently receive coverage, will be added. Despite bipartisan efforts to craft a bill that extends this crucial health care program in a responsible way, President Bush still refused to back off his veto threat. I voted YES to override his veto. Unfortunately, the House vote fell short and the veto was sustained. The entire vote is recorded below:
