RECENT VOTESH.R. 976: State Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization ActSeptember 25, 2007 On Tuesday the House considered Senate amendments to H.R. 976: State Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act of 2007 (SCHIP). As you may recall, the House and the Senate have both passed previous legislation reauthorizing SCHIP. The program is set to expire at the end of the month and negotiators have been working out the differences between both versions of this important legislation. Tuesday's vote on Senate amendments to H.R. 976 is the result of those negotiations. This bill provides an additional $35 billion over 5 years to provide health insurance for low income children. The 6.6 million children currently receiving health insurance under SCHIP will continue to be covered and as many as 4 million additional children who are eligible but do not currently receive coverage, will be added. Despite bipartisan efforts to craft a bill that extends this crucial health care program in a responsible way, President Bush is still threatening a veto. I voted YES. H.R. 976 passed in the House and the entire vote is recorded below:
