RECENT VOTESH.R. 180: Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007July 31, 2007 On July 31, 2007 the House passed H.R. 180: Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007. As many of you know, I am co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Sudan. I am gravely concerned about the ongoing genocide and am searching for ways to ease the suffering of so many innocent people. One way is to limit funds available to the Sudanese government by restricting investments in companies that do business with them. This bill directs the Treasury Secretary to create a list of companies that either conduct business with the Government of Sudan or invest in key Sudanese industries, and it prohibits federal government contracts with such companies. It also includes provisions that specifically authorize states to divest from Sudan and it protects investment and pension funds that seek to do the same. This provision is essential in warding off lawsuits from those who wish to maximize profits without regard for a people's suffering. I was proud to support this bill as one of its first co-sponsors. I voted YES. H.R. 180 passed in the House.
