RECENT VOTESStem Cell ResearchJune 7, 2007 On Thursday June 7th considered S.5: Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007. This legislation expands the number of embryonic stem cells eligible for federally-funded research, and stipulates that federal funds may only be used on stem cell lines derived from embryos that fertility clinics would have discarded. Additionally, all embryos used for stem cell extraction must be donated by the individuals who initially sought the fertility treatment. The bill also directs the Secretary to conduct and support research on alternative pluripotent stem cells, including issuing guidelines related to this emerging area. There is broad support in the scientific and medical communities for stem cell research and many believe that stem cells hold the key to understanding diseases like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and Parkinson's disease. This research could lead to treatment options and even cures for many diseases. The federal government must support this research and S.5 in an important step toward vastly expanding this field in a responsible and respectful manner. I voted YES. S.5 passed the House and the entire vote is recorded below:
