 12,456 subscribers RECENT VOTESIraqMay 15, 2007 On Thursday May 24th, the House considered additional legislation for continued funding of the war in Iraq. For months, Democrats have been working to craft a bill that provides sufficient resources for our troops while at the same time establishing a solid timeline for ending major involvement in Iraq. Democrats have also been pushing for the inclusion of a series of benchmarks that the Iraqi government must meet. I supported those efforts, along with most of the Democratic Caucus and a handful of Republicans. As you know, President Bush vetoed the last supplemental appropriations bill because it included both benchmarks and a timeline for troop withdrawal. The previous legislation passed by the House also included a number of non-war spending provisions that were either emergency needs or not adequately funded last year. Some of these important items include an increase in the federal minimum wage, the State Children's Health Insurance Program and hurricane relief and rebuilding efforts, as well as a provision to block Medicaid cuts proposed by the Bush Administration. This week's legislation was split into two amendments, one that addressed war funding and another that addressed the domestic funding included in the last bill. The Iraq amendment did not include the strong restrictions on the President's conduct of the war that would be necessary for me to support it. I voted NO. A majority of the Democratic Caucus and 2 Republicans also voted NO. Regardless, the legislation passed and is expected to be signed by the President. I am disappointed that there are not enough votes in the House and Senate to support a strong plan for troop withdrawal. However, support for this course of action continues to grow and I am convinced that there will come a time when we can sustain a veto.
