One star is due to your present lack of Smithsonian management and oversight. Since oversight of the... Smithsonian is one of the Committee’s listed duties, it’s urgent that Chairman Harper and the members of the committee FREEZE the plan to close (at the end of Sept., 2017), and then demolish, the Samuel C. Johnson IMAX Theater, a major part of the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum on the DC Mall. For specific information read “The Hill” article dated September 29, 2017, “Smithsonian wants to grill more hot dogs. Congress should grill the Smithsonian.”
This is the most visited Natural History Museum in the world, which includes a theater that vibrantly showcases the themes of its exhibits. You should be crying foul, as without your intervention and oversight, the Smithsonian’s premier venue for seeing nature and science documentaries is about to be permanently lost. We all benefit when someone viewing one of these magnificent films leaves the theater inspired and motivated, yet there is no other venue in Washington DC or even in some entire states, for seeing them if the Museum’s director, Kirk Johnson, is allowed to destroy this theater. It is reprehensible to squander not only the monetary investment in this theater, but also the opportunity to inspire the thousands of students going to the Museum this school year alone, when a nature documentary takes them on 3D science expeditions immersed in a 6-story, IMAX screen, because he has decided to tear down the museum's entire theater, and only for the purpose of building a bigger food court! Director Kirk Johnson should not be allowed to quietly do such irreparable damage to a Smithsonian Museum! If the Director really has millions to spend, it's obvious ideas can be solicited for creating more dining space WITHOUT DESTROYING the Museum's extraordinary, 6-story IMAX Theater. Your Committee needs to insist that the Smithsonian Board of Regents and the Board of the Natural History Museum take the time to create a plan that benefits, not harms, the existing Museum and the Smithsonian.
