The National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with 145,000 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies.

Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)

About: The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a nonprofit national association representing more than 3,000 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Founded in 1952, this partnership of educational and professional institutions, social welfare agencies, and private citizens is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in this country.

Mission: CSWE is a national association of social work education programs and individuals that ensures and enhances the quality of social work education for a professional practice that promotes individual, family, and community well-being, and social and economic justice. CSWE pursues this mission in higher education by setting and maintaining national accreditation standards for baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in social work, by promoting faculty development, by engaging in international collaborations, and by advocating for social work education and research.

The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR)

About: The Society for Social Work and Research was founded in 1994 as a free-standing organization dedicated to the advancement of social work research. SSWR works collaboratively with a number of other organizations that are committed to improving support for research among social workers. SSWR's more than 1300 members, both nationally and internationally, include faculty in schools of social work and other professional schools, research staff in public and private agencies, and masters/doctoral students. SSWR is represented in more than 200 universities and instiutions around the globe.

Mission:

  1. Encourages the design, implementation and dissemination of rigorous research that enhances knowledge about critical social work practice and social policy problems and advances social welfare practices and programs;
  2. Fosters a trans-disciplinary inter-professional support network of investigators conducting research on social work practice and social policy in the United States and around the world;
  3. Provides learning opportunities to improve the conduct of social work-relevant research and its application;
  4. Promotes practices and policies grounded in an evidence-base;
  5. Supports increased research funding and training programs for social work researchers;
  6. Provides formal recognition of significant contributions to social work-relevant research; and
  7. Seeks active partnerships with other social work and research-related organizations to accomplish all of the above
