Object Details

Hawaiian Delegate Samuel Wilder King proudly showed off the 49th star on this unofficial U.S. flag in 1935. Four Hawaiian women stitched the flag as the territory aspired for statehood. But when Hawaii was finally admitted as a state soon after Alaska in 1959, it became the 50th state—not the 49th—and this flag incorrectly predicted history.
