Biography

PATTERSON, John H., a Doorkeeper from New Jersey; born in Howell, Monmouth County, N.J., March 12, 1834; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1856; engaged in the oyster business; sheriff, Monmouth County, N.J., 1868–1872; unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States House of Representatives in 1872; elected Doorkeeper of the United States House of Representatives for the Forty-fourth Congress (May 26, 1876–October 17, 1877); keeper, New Jersey State Prison, Trenton, N.J., 1886–1896; farmer; died on November 4, 1909, in Middletown, N.J.
