FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

House LGBT Caucus Statement on Aderholt Amendment to Labor-HHS Appropriations Bill

Washington, D.C. – The Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus today released the following statement in response to the House Appropriations Committee voting to adopt an amendment to the Labor and Health and Human Services appropriations bill permitting child welfare providers to discriminate against LGBT people in adoption and foster care services.

“This amendment is not just a petty attack on the LGBTQ community – it’s also going to hurt innocent children who are waiting for nothing more than to be adopted by a loving family,” said LGBT Equality Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18). “I have three wonderful children who may not have had a home if the agencies who placed them with me and my husband were allowed to discriminate. This sends the message that having no family is better than having an LGBTQ family – I don’t know how anyone could believe that.”

The amendment, sponsored by Rep. Robert Aderhold (AL-04), was adopted by the full committee on a 29-23 vote.
