Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) released the following statement after joining officials from the Environmental Protect Agency (EPA), the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC) to tour the successful clean up of the former Zephyr Oil Refinery in Muskegon Township and discuss the importance of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
"The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative continues to play a vital role in cleaning up pollution from the past, protecting the Great Lakes, and preserving them for future generations,” said Congressman Huizenga. “By removing 50,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment, today's project brings Muskegon Lake even closer to being delisted as an area of environmental concern. Building on the success of the delisting of White Lake in 2016, the restoration of Muskegon Lake will generate new economic opportunities, increase tourism, and continue to make Muskegon County an even better place to raise a family.
"As the Republican Co-Chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, I have worked to build bipartisan support for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative because it has consistently delivered positive results for Muskegon County as well as communities across West Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes Region. I will continue to make this critical program a priority because the health of the Great Lakes is directly tied to our economy, and our way of life here in Michigan."
Tonight I joined 217 House Republicans to pass common sense legislation that funds govt, disaster relief and improves border integrity. Democrats in the Senate have a decision to make. I voted to prioritize our nation’s border security, I hope they do the same.
In West Michigan we believe in second chances and today, Congress passed bipartisan legislation to help those who have made mistakes turn their lives around. Additionally this legislation takes important steps to improve community safety by holding violent offenders accountable for their actions. Lastly, I successfully fought for the inclusion of provisions that prevent the federal government from expanding its prison labor workforce and putting hardworking law-abiding employees here in West Michigan out of work.
