Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Student Internships
An internship with the Office of U.S. Senator Brian Schatz offers students a deeper understanding of public service, community concerns and priorities, and the legislative process. Ideal applicants are strong writers with excellent communication skills who are ready to work in a fast-paced environment.
Undergraduate internships in both the Washington, D.C. and Honolulu offices are available year round. Preference is given to students toward the end of their educational programs, and applicants must have completed at least one year of college at the time of their internship. Graduate and law school internships are available in the D.C. office.
Students are encouraged to apply early as there are a limited number of positions in each office and applications will be reviewed as received. No accommodations can be made once all positions are filled.
For summer applicants: While the timeline can vary, all summer internship offers are generally made in early April. Regardless of potential start date, students interested in summer positions should submit their applications by early March.

High School Internship Program
U.S. Senator Brian Schatz's high school internship program provides a hands-on learning opportunity and encourages students to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities. While each year's activities are adjusted to reflect the interests of selected students, previous classes have conducted peer surveys, attended community meetings, tracked how federal legislation impacts their communities, and learned how to propose the office take action on issues that are important to them.
The internship runs from October - April, and interns must commit for the full term. This is not an office position and students should miss little or no class time performing the tasks or assignments related to the program. The program uses online tools and communication methods, including weekly video conferences, so students from all islands are encouraged to apply.
Public, private, charter, and homeschool students in the state of Hawaii may apply. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or better and have personal access to email throughout the internship. Interns will be selected based on their involvement in their community (jobs, activities, and responsibilities), diversity of interests and life experiences, and demonstrated leadership involvement. Strong preference is given to students in their last year of school. Underclassmen who are interested in the program should contact the office before applying.
Applications for the 2018 - 19 school year are now closed. The application for the 2019 - 20 school year will be available in the spring.
