Embracing New Roles

Clark County Department of Family Services (DFS) is proud that 42 percent of our children placed in out-of-home care are placed with relatives. Here is the story of just one of those relatives that stepped up to care for these children.

Victor is a kinship caregiver for seven relative children, all under the age of 10. When asked by DFS, Victor and his fiancée, Janna, humbly stepped into the role of being care providers to all seven children. Although this was a daunting responsibility, Victor and Janna embraced their new roles as their calling in their lives. Victor and Janna have three of their own children ages 10 and 12 years old and 4 months old. Victor and Janna were well liked in their foster care training classes and were seen as positive role models. They share that the success they have with their large family is achieved by following household routines and directions.

Victor and Janna share that they shower their children with love and support and advocate for their needs. According to Victor, “the children are just so happy all the time” and are successful in school, sports, and group activities. They are also thankful to the Foster Kinship Program and DCF for helping to keep his family together where they can thrive and receive the support of a loving family.
