Congresswoman Marcia Fudge Announces the City of Akron has been Selected as New TechHire Community

AKRON, OH – Today, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) is pleased to announce Akron is one of two Ohio cities selected to participate in President Barack Obama's TechHire initiative.  The Akron initiative will place 400 people in accelerated tech jobs and internships by the end of 2016.

“I applaud the greater Akron community for its commitment to provide 21st century jobs to Ohioans,” said Congresswoman Fudge.  “Technology is changing the face of our economy and transforming our workforce.  President Obama’s TechHire initiative underscores our nation’s need to prepare Americans for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”

As part of the President’s initiative, TechHire communities, like Akron, are making independent commitments to make sure applicants can find work based on skills and not just degrees.  By doing so the program looks to: 1) create more accelerated tech training opportunities,  2) invest in innovative placement programs, and 3) connect more diverse workers including women, minorities, veterans and young adults with entrepreneurial opportunities and jobs.

As a Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, Congresswoman Fudge is dedicated to providing Ohioans with the skills necessary to obtain 21st century jobs like those created through the TechHire initiative.  Earlier this year, Congresswoman Fudge introduced the Community STEM Learning Act of 2015 to increase opportunities for minority youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“The number of STEM-related jobs is on the rise.  Programs like the TechHire initiative are needed now more than ever.  We must provide our residents with the right resources to excel in these highly competitive jobs,” said Congresswoman Fudge.
