Chairman Murphy Reacts to Administration Ruling Out Travel Restrictions

Congressman Tim Murphy, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, released the following statement following this afternoon’s briefing on the Ebola virus outbreak conducted by Administration public health officials. Despite concerns over breakdowns in airline passenger screening procedures that resulted in the arrival at the Dulles International Airport and eventual stay in Texas of a Liberian citizen infected with the Ebola virus, the White House announced today it would not consider travel restrictions to protect American citizens from the virus.

“I am deeply concerned that Administration officials are not engaging in a discussion of travel restrictions from the Ebola ‘hot zones’ such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone,” said Rep. Murphy who will convene an Oversight hearing on the federal response to the Ebola outbreak. “Travelers self-reporting at the airport has been a demonstrated failure and it is nearly impossible to retrace steps to try and track down everyone who has been in contact with a carrier taking multiple international flights across the globe.”

Rep. Murphy (R-PA) announced a hearing of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, for Thursday, October 16, 2014, at 12:00 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Instutite of Allergy and Infectious Disease at the National Institutes of Health, will testify with additional witnesses to be announced. Committee leaders sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell on September 12, 2014, seeking more information about the outbreak and the government’s preparedness and response efforts. The committee has been in regular communication with the CDC and others involved in containment efforts. The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
