  • Rep. Engel: Doc Fix Good for Our Seniors and Doctors

"I have always said our doctors deserve to be fairly compensated for the quality care they provide to seniors, but the SGR formula in place to calculate compensation for Medicare physicians has failed to do that for years," Congressman Engel said. "The Senate's passage last night of H.R. 2, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, mirroring the work done by the House last month, finally ends the tradition of coming up with last-minute, temporary solutions to keep our doctors from facing steep cuts in their Medicare reimbursements. We have passed a permanent solution to this expensive problem, all by having the courage to end partisan bickering and compromise.

  • Rep. Engel: Repealing the SGR Formula Is The Right Thing To Do For Our Seniors, Our Children and Our Doctors

"I have always believed that our doctors deserve to be fairly compensated, but the SGR formula we had in place to calculate compensation for Medicare providers failed to do that for over a decade. Our doctors shouldn't face Medicare cuts year after year, which is why I am pleased House Democrats and Republicans have come together to craft a fair compromise to this long-standing and expensive problem. By ensuring that our physicians are fairly compensated under Medicare, we are also ensuring that those same physicians will continue to accept Medicare patients, thus allowing our seniors to have access to the best medical care possible.

  • Engel and Renacci Introduce Bill to Reform Hospital Readmission Program

"The Establishing Beneficiary Equity in the Hospital Readmission Program Act that Rep. Renacci and I have introduced in the House, and Senators Portman and Manchin have introduced in the Senate, would make a vital correction to the HRRP hospital readmission formula, which currently treats certain hospitals in lower socioeconomic communities unfairly," Congressman Engel said. "Hospitals must be held accountable for providing high quality care to all patients, but as numerous studies have shown, socioeconomic factors can influence patient outcomes. Therefore, hospitals serving our neediest populations shouldn't be penalized for doing so. This is a piece of common sense legislation and I hope it passes in the House and Senate quickly."

  • Rep. Engel Cosponsors Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act to Create Single-Payer Option

According to data released in January 2015 by Gallup, nearly 13 percent of all adults still lack health coverage, despite the incredible decrease in uninsured Americans as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Health care costs also remain a concern for many Americans, as out-of-pocket health expenses, including workers' premium contributions and deductibles, accounted for 9.6 percent of median household income in 2013, an increase of 4.3 percent from the previous decade. As a result, many Americans are still forced to prioritize their expenses, often to the detriment of their own personal health.

  • REP. ENGEL – SENIORS NEED MORE SOCIAL SECURITY HELP

Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) again called on Congress to support legislation he is re-introducing in the 112th Congress that would guarantee seniors a cost-of-living increase in their Social Security benefits. This is designed to help them avoid a repeat of their not getting such increases in the past two years. Due to the way the COLA is calculated, for the second consecutive year seniors did not receive a COLA increase in their monthly benefits. Before 2010, there had never been a year without an increase, since automatic adjustments for inflation was installed in 1975. Shockingly, seniors have lost about 24 percent of their buying power since 2000

The bill will go to President Obama for his signature, and if signed as expected, will protect seniors and military families' access to doctors throughout 2011.

  • REP. ENGEL – SOCIAL SECURITY AID FOR SENIORS FAILS TO PASS HOUSE

Despite having Congressman Eliot Engel's (D-NY-17) full support, the House failed to pass legislation to give Social Security recipients a one-time $250 payment to make up for the lack of a Cost-of-Living-Adjustment (COLA) for 2011. A low rate of inflation means that for the second consecutive year, Social Security retirees, veterans, and people with disabilities will see no increase in their monthly Social Security, SSI, VA Pension and Compensation, and Railroad Retirement benefits. These are the first two times since 1976, when the COLA system was established, that recipients did not receive COLA.
