Paulsen: Patients Deserve More Health Care Choices and Flexibility

Washington, D.C.– In a House Ways and Means Committee hearing entitled “The Tax Treatment of Health Care,” Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) spoke about the need for more choice and flexibility in the health care system. Paulsen highlighted his legislation, the Health Savings Act, that would expand use of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and heard from witnesses on how increased use of these accounts would lower health care costs.

“Minnesotans continue to tell me how much they appreciate being able to use their Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts that provide them with more choices and make health care more affordable,” said Paulsen. “In fact, many want to know why these options aren’t available to members of the military and seniors, or why when using these accounts they need a doctor’s prescription to buy over-the-counter medication. We should look at ways to promote these patient-centered options and make them a central piece of our nation’s health care system.”
