Medical Device Tax Repeal Passed by U.S. House of Representatives

Washington, D.C.– In a vote Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation, the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act, which repeals the burdensome medical device tax. The legislation included the Protect Medical Innovation Act, a bill authored by Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03)that eliminates the 2.3% excise tax on the sale of medical devices. Paulsen spoke on the floor in favor of the legislation.

“This is the fifth time that the House has taken action to repeal this harmful, burdensome tax,” said Paulsen. “I’ll continue to look for avenues to push this legislation forward so we can finally remove a key barrier to medical innovation and job creation. With the American people and a bipartisan majority in Congress in support of eliminating the medical device tax, there’s no excuse not to push its repeal across the finish line.”

Earlier this year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protect Medical Innovation Act with enough support to overturn a Presidential veto. Along with repealing the medical device tax, the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act also would eliminate the employer and individual mandates along with the unpopular Cadillac tax.

Congressman Paulsen, a champion of small business and advocate of free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and innovation, serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, the bicameral Joint Economic Committee, and is co-chair of the Congressional Medical Technology Caucus.
