Building: House Office Buildings

The Cannon House Office Building has not received a comprehensive systems upgrade since the 1930s, and many of the building's systems are original – dating back to 1908 or earlier. These systems are past the end of their useful lives and the increasing risk of their failure jeopardizes the building's long-term functionality and safety. Other necessary work includes upgrading infrastructure systems andrepairing the exterior stone façade.

Plaster repairs underway at the U.S. Capitol

The AOC has identified areas throughout the Capitol that contain historic paint colors or decoration that need restoration. In many of these areas the plaster has cracked under the stress and weight of multiple paint layers, a result of decades of repainting wall and ceiling surfaces. These areas have been marked for paint analysis; a process that allows the AOC to record what finishes were used in the past before repairing the wall. West Front Staging Area

In support of the Dome Restoration Project trucks deliver equipment and supplies to the East and West Fronts of the U.S. Capitol between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Flagmen direct pedestrians to use the sidewalk during the delivery process for safety. Additionally, a staging area has been established on the northwest lawn of the U.S. Capitol for the duration of the project.... More »

This restoration project entails cleaning, repairing and restoring the Vermont marble of the cheek walls on either side of west steps, and the North, South and East Façades of the Supreme Court Building. The stone will be cleaned to remove general soil, black gypsum crusts, biological deposits, and copper stains.
