WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“As Americans we honor the memory of a man who stirred the conscience of a nation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had an unswerving commitment to the equality of all Americans, and a firm dedication to seeing America live up to her highest ideals of liberty. More than five decades after his life’s work, we know many challenges remain. But we also know that Dr. King’s dream is still alive and still inspires America to fulfill the principles of our founding. On this day, let us rededicate ourselves to living in the truth that we are all God’s children. In so doing, we can realize Dr. King’s words that ‘the beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.’”

McConnell on the Resignation of Marilyn Tavenner

‘We now call on the President to nominate someone whose sole focus will be to look out for our nation’s seniors and the many vulnerable Americans who use these programs, and not distract them from that task with Obamacare.’

January 16, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Marilyn Tavenner:

“The role of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator is supposed to be about overseeing these important programs, not implementing a gigantic, unworkable law that hurts hardworking Americans. While we appreciate her service, no one could have successfully managed a law as unworkable as Obamacare. We now call on the President to nominate someone whose sole focus will be to look out for our nation’s seniors and the many vulnerable Americans who use these programs, and not distract them from that task with Obamacare.

“We also call on President Obama to work with us to replace this law with real reforms that lower costs and don’t hurt the middle class the way Obamacare does.”

President Should Offer Positive, Bipartisan Agenda in State of the Union

‘The State of the Union is a unique opportunity not just for the president, but for our entire country. If he lays out an agenda that corresponds to the message voters delivered in November, it could signal a truly productive moment for our country.’

January 16, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate Floor regarding the President’s State of the Union next week:

“We’re looking forward to welcoming President Obama to the Capitol on Tuesday.

“The State of the Union is a unique opportunity not just for the president, but for our entire country.

“If he lays out an agenda that corresponds to the message voters delivered in November, it could signal a truly productive moment for our country.

“In November, the American people told us they’re tired of Washington’s dysfunction, and they told us they’re tired of Washington prioritizing the concerns of powerful special interests over their own.

“They called for a Congress that functions again, and that’s just what we’ve been working toward.

“They called for Congress to focus on jobs and reform, and that’s just what we’ve been doing.

“They also called for President Obama to cooperate with Congress to enact a different and better reform agenda for the middle class.

“On that front, we’ve got some distance to cover.

“But Tuesday can be a new day. This can be the moment the president pivots to a positive posture. This can be a day he promotes serious, realistic reforms that focus on economic growth and don’t just spend more money we don’t have. We’re eager for him to do so.

“There’s much we can get accomplished for the American people, if the president’s willing to work with us.

“We’ll be looking for signs of that in the speech he delivers.”
