Pelosi Statement on LGBT Pride Month

San Francisco – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement today in honor of LGBT Pride Month, which begins on June 1:

“During LGBT Pride Month, we celebrate the triumphs LGBT Americans continue to make to advance freedom in our country.  One of America’s first openly LGBT elected officials, the late San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk said, ‘hope can never be silent.’  Today and every day, we raise our voices to create a more hopeful future for all.

“By expanding hate crimes protection, repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, and ensuring marriage equality across America, we are making progress so that everyone has the freedom to pursue happiness regardless of who they are, how they look, or who they love. 

“Yet, in statehouses and in the Congress, Republicans are pushing a discriminatory agenda targeting LGBT Americans.  Our work must continue to fulfill the promise of America.  Congress must pass the Equality Act to end discrimination.  Americans must confront bigotry in all its forms.  Let us celebrate LGBT Pride Month by embracing the hope that together, we can advance the cause of freedom for all Americans.”
