Washington, DC U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Thursday regarding the Department of Veterans Affairs' announcement on the location of the new Robley Rex VA Medical Center:

“Now that the Department of Veterans Affairs has finally selected a location for the Robley Rex VA Medical Center, work can begin on the new state-of-art facility, which will ensure that the men and women who so bravely served our country will receive the quality health care they deserve.  The construction on the new VA hospital has been a top priority of mine, and I’m pleased the VA Secretary made the decision.  Our veterans have waited long enough; it’s time to get construction underway.”

Background:  In 2008, Senator McConnell secured $75 Million for the new VA Medical Center.  In 2009, McConnell introduced and helped pass legislation to name the current and future hospital after Kentucky veteran, Robley Rex.  In the intervening years, the Senator time and again urged the VA to consider input from Kentucky veterans before deciding on a location for the new VAMC.  While the Senator has never endorsed a particular site, he succeeded in getting the VA to commit to a timeline for a final decision and then repeatedly urged the VA to do all it could to comply with that deadline.

‘The Democrat health care law has made things worse; Americans want it repealed; and that’s precisely what we intend to do. Americans want us to start over. And today’s decision does nothing to change that. The court’s ruling doesn’t mark the end of a debate. It marks a fresh start on the road to repeal. That’s been our goal from the start. That’s our goal now. And we plan to achieve it.’

Washington, D.C.– U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the President’s healthcare law:

“Today’s decision makes one thing clear: Congress must act to repeal this misguided law. Obamacare has not only limited choices and increased health care costs for American families, it has made it harder for American businesses to hire. Today’s decision does nothing to diminish the fact that Obamacare’s mandates, tax hikes, and Medicare cuts should be repealed and replaced with common sense reforms that lower costs and that the American people actually want. It is my hope that with new leadership in the White House and Senate, we can enact these step-by-step solutions and prevent further damage from this terrible law.”

Background: Sen. McConnell spearheaded the effort by Senate Republicans to repeal Obamacare. He delivered more than 110 floor speeches prior to and after passage of the President’s health care law, and he and his colleagues filed four amicus briefs in court arguing against the constitutionality of the law. Every Republican senator opposed final passage of the law, and Sen. McConnell followed through with his promise to make repeal of Obamacare one of the first votes taken by the Senate at the start of the 112th Congress. He has pledged to make repeal of the health care law the first vote next year if Republicans are elected to the Senate majority in 2013.
