Marc's Memo - July 2016 Updates
Dear Friends,
On Thursday, July 7, 2016, our community suffered the deadliest single incident against U.S. law enforcement since September 11, 2001. On this horrific date, five Dallas police officers were killed during a peaceful protest calling for an end to police brutality. As a nation, we must remember that violence of any kind does not solve violence against another community.
During this time, America witnessed the DFW community come together to mourn the loss of the fallen officers but also highlight the need to build trust between law enforcement and the communities they police. We truly are #DallasStrong.
In the coming weeks, I invite you to join me as I host two town halls in the DFW Metroplex to discuss issues that continue to affect you and your community and how I can best represent you in our nation’s capital.

A Win for Texas Voters
On Wednesday, July 20, 2016, Texas voters’ fair access to the ballot box was restored. After careful and thorough deliberation, the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled on the right side of history. They found what many of us already knew to be true: Texas’ restrictive photo voter ID law discriminates against minority voters and disenfranchises eligible American voters. As the lead plaintiff in Veasey v. Abbott and as the co-chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus (CVRC), I am elated that after a long battle, Texans will once again be able to exercise one of their fundamental rights as U.S. citizens. There is no more sacred right as an American than the right to vote.

Protecting our Nation
This month I had the opportunity to participate in the F-35 cockpit demonstrator to “fly” and experience our nation’s most advanced stealth fighter that is built right here in Fort Worth, Texas. The advanced capabilities of the F-35 are necessary to counter the advanced threats our nation faces today and will face in the years to come.

As a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I continue to work hard to ensure our service members have the tools and resources they need to protect us at home and abroad.
Grant Writing Workshop
This month, in cooperation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and participation with the U.S. Census Bureau, I hosted a grant writing workshop to help local DFW Metroplex organizations learn how to apply for federal grants for their community-based projects.
Grand Prairie, Texas— Congressman Veasey welcomes nearly 300 DFW Metroplex residents attended the 2016 Grant Writing workshop to learn more about the federal grant process.

Clocking-in with McDonald’s
For July’s ‘Marc Means Business,’ I worked the breakfast and lunch shifts at one of McDonald’s black-owned franchises in Dallas. I had the opportunity to greet customers, serve as a crew leader motivating employees, distribute prepared meals to drive-thru customers and learn more about the daily responsibilities of fast food workers and managers.
