I’m pleased to celebrate the opening of Griffin Hall, home of the NKU College of Informatics, the first and only college of its kind in Kentucky. Northern Kentucky University is now home to the most technologically advanced informatics facility in the region.

Looking at this facility, I can see education technology has certainly come a long way. I think when I was in school, the abacus was still the latest educational invention.

Now, thanks to the College of Informatics and its cutting-edge resources, NKU will be able to attract more students, the best professors, and even bigger opportunities.

The College of Informatics will also play a large role in helping to grow Kentucky’s economy by supporting business in this region and creating jobs.

None of this would have been possible without the efforts of my good friend Dr. Jim Vortruba. I know I am not the only one who’s going to be very sorry to see him go.

It reminds me of when the Dodgers lost my favorite baseball player and another great Kentuckian, Pee Wee Reese. It won’t be the same team without him.

Jim, in 14 years at the helm of Northern Kentucky University, enrollment is up, the number of degree programs offered has increased, and the school’s endowment has increased fivefold.

You have made NKU one of Kentucky’s and the nation’s leading metropolitan universities. This new state-of-the-art facility is just the latest step in NKU’s remarkable growth under your leadership.

I’m glad we aren’t losing you for good and you will return to teach and lend us your institutional wisdom.

In your tenure you’ve set NKU on the right path. This university is helping Kentucky to lead the way in education, innovation, and new economic opportunity. Its continued growth is going to be exciting to watch.

Thank you.

The Democrat Plan: Permanent Tax Hike to Pay for a Temporary Stimulus
‘The President has said it’s wrong to raise taxes in this weak economic environment. If he meant what he said, surely he’ll join me in opposing this unwise tax hike Senate Democrats have proposed. Republicans, along with some Democrats, have pro-growth solutions to help solve this crisis, but we will not stand for a permanent tax hike for a temporary stimulus that is largely a rehash of the same failed stimulus ideas this administration has already tried. This bill is the same wasteful spending, the same burdensome union giveaways, and the same temporary tax policy that has failed the American people the last two years.’
