Murphy To Appear on Fox News Sunday: Ebola Crisis

(WASHINGTON, DC) — Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy (PA-18) will appear on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace this Sunday, October 19, 2014 to discuss the federal response to the Ebola virus outbreak. The program airs at 10:00AM on WPGH-53 in Pittsburgh, PA and 9:00AM in the Washington, D.C. area.

Murphy convened a hearing on Thursday, Examining the U.S. Public Health Response to the Ebola Outbreak,” where top medical officials in the federal government were questioned by Chairman Murphy about the decisions that have exacerbated the Ebola outbreak in the US.

Based on the information gathered, Chairman Murphy sent a letter Thursday afternoon immediately at the conclusion of the hearing to the President detailing immediate steps to control the outbreak. The nine key next steps included among others, travel restrictions; 21-day quarantines for those Americans who have been exposed to Ebola or were visiting the West African hot spots; identify and designate specific medical centers equipped and trained to treat potential Ebola patients; stepped up training and protection for healthcare workers; accelerated review and approval by the Food and Drug Administration of promising vaccines, treatments, and diagnostic tests for the Ebola virus. Two of Murphy’s recommendations, additional attention to vaccine manufacturing and new quarantine measures for medical professionals in Dallas treating Ebola victims, were announced late Friday afternoon. But other measures like travel restrictions have been rejected by the White House.

“Keeping an open-door travel policy that relies on an honor system is deeply troubling to Americans because, as we’ve seen with the known US cases of Ebola infection, the screening, self-monitoring and self-reporting at airports have been demonstrated failures and put Americans at risk,” said Murphy.

Earlier on Friday, Murphy said the appointment of former Biden Chief of Staff Ron Klain as coordinator for the Administration’s government-wide Ebola response was “both shocking and frankly tone deaf to what the American people are concerned about.”

“Installing yet another political appointee who has no medical background or infectious disease control experience will do little to reassure Americans who are increasingly losing confidence with the Administration’s Ebola strategy. Not one of the medical experts who testified at our hearing yesterday said what is needed to stop the spread of the Ebola virus is a Czar, spokesman or campaign operative with no relevant experience telling them what to do. We need leadership from the President and changes to the current policies to end the scourge of Ebola here and in Western Africa.”

Also appearing on Fox News Sunday will be Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, who testified at Murphy’s hearing on Thursday; Dr. Michael Osterholm, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research at the University of Minnesota; Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus; and Democratic National Committee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL).

Murphy will also discuss the Ebola Czar on Fox Business News’ “Cavuto” airing tonight at 8PM.
