From the fight for women’s suffrage to efforts to break the glass ceiling and all points in between, much has been done to advance women’s rights. We stand on the shoulders of giants. However, you don’t need me to tell you that we have still have barriers to overcome. Just as I formed manufacturing, agriculture, and veterans’ advisory groups that I rely on for policy recommendations, several years ago I organized a group of the district’s most outstanding women leaders to advise me as we strive to achieve economic security for women in America. In our own way, we are building on the foundation laid a century ago by the visionary and courageous women whose unyielding efforts advanced the civil rights of women.

For more than a century, America has led the world in scientific innovation, and a commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is crucial to our innovative capacity and global competitiveness. Unfortunately, women are vastly underrepresented in STEM employment, holding less than 25 percent of STEM jobs, despite making up nearly half of the U.S. workforce. Increasing opportunities for women in these fields is not just the right thing to do but the smart thing to do. Women in other fields often find a different set of barriers such as unspoken bias or finding that their perspectives are too easily dismissed. And of course, women trying to balance family life and career advancement find another set of barriers that make reaching their true potential difficult.

We will be discussing these issues and more on March 18th at the Solano County Government Center. The program will be inspiring, informative, and offer an opportunity to share experiences and views.
